Many muscle car enthusiasts seem to be more concerned about the performance than other attributes that a car has.
The S550 Mustang, one of the most modern muscle cars, has passed the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety’s crash test. It has even beaten its strong rivals such as the Dodge Challenger and Chevrolet Camaro. Although the IIHS has compared the three cars in the past, this is the first time that the Mustang comes near the coveted Top Safety Pick award. However, according to officials at the IIHS, the Mustang was held back by a small front overlap rating.
On the other hand, the Camaro earned an excellent front overlap score. However, it lacked front collision avoidance system such as automatic braking system that is necessary to earn the Top Safety Pick award. However, out of the five testing categories, the Camaro received four good ratings and one acceptable rating. The fair rating was as a result of the roof strength test.
On its part, the Challenger received a marginal rating owing to its decade old LX platform. And although the challenger has a forward collision avoidance system, test officials found its safety wanting. The officials even had to unbolt a leg from the dummy after the overlap test. This could have been a bad scenario if a human was seated inside the car at the time of the crash. The good thing, however, is that the challenger can avoid such an accident owing to its forward collision avoidance system. Overall, the Mustang emerged the winner, and people are speculating on what Ford engineers might be planning as they look to make the Mustang even safer.Continue on Page 2
